In many different spiritual traditions, the physical act of lighting candles is a sacred act. It is meant to express more than words can say. Being the light of the world means every part of your being would emit light removing darkness and shadows. We are not to light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, put it on its stand, so that it gives light to everyone around it.
